Blue Cohosh — Caulophyllum thalictroides — is one of the most important women's herbs in Native American medicine, used extensively by Cherokee, Iroquois, Ojibwe, Menominee, and many other tribes as a foundational herb for women's reproductive wellness. European settlers learned of it from Native American healers and it quickly became one of the most widely used herbs in 19th century American botanical medicine.
The Eclectic physicians of the 19th century considered Blue Cohosh indispensable for women's reproductive wellness. Native American midwives used it as a birthing herb for generations. Today it remains a respected herb in natural women's wellness practice, though it is powerful and should be used thoughtfully.
