Cascara Sagrada — "Sacred Bark" in Spanish — is a tree native to the Pacific Northwest of North America whose bark has been used by Native American tribes of the region, particularly the Cascade, Shoshone, and other Pacific Northwest tribes, as a digestive and laxative herb for generations before Spanish missionaries gave it its sacred name in the 17th century.
Spanish missionaries in California observed Native Americans using the bark and were so impressed by its effectiveness that they called it "sacred bark" — cascara sagrada. It was officially listed in the U.S. Pharmacopeia from 1890 to 1975 and remains one of the most widely used natural laxative herbs in the world today.
Named sacred by Spanish missionaries. Listed in the US Pharmacopeia for 85 years.
Use aged bark only (aging reduces harshness). Brew as tea or take as tincture. Start with small amounts. Best used short-term for occasional digestive support.
